The Nigerian Army has warned the public about viral fraudulent social media accounts impersonating the Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu. In a statement released on Friday, January 9, the military clarified that these accounts are unauthorized and are being used for criminal activities.
Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu does not own any personal or official accounts on any social media platform. Perpetrators use these fake profiles to solicit funds from unsuspecting citizens and spread misinformation.
The Nigerian Army has launched an investigation to identify, track, and prosecute the individuals behind these fraudulent accounts.
The Nigerian Army wishes to categorically state that the Chief of Army Staff does not have any official social media presence on any platform.
The Nigerian Army is taking all the necessary steps to apprehend the operators of these fake accounts with a view to bringing them to justice in accordance with the extant laws – Colonel Appolonia Anele
The Army is currently collaborating with cyber-intelligence units to monitor digital platforms and disable the identified fake accounts. Nigerians are advised to report any suspicious profiles claiming to represent the military leadership to the appropriate authorities.
