BREAKING: Rivers State Assembly begins impeachment proceedings against Governor Fubara

The Rivers State House of Assembly commenced formal impeachment proceedings against Governor Siminalayi Fubara and Deputy Governor Ngozi Oduh on Thursday.

During a plenary session in Port Harcourt, the Assembly leadership outlined allegations of gross misconduct and constitutional violations as the basis for the action.

‎It is not news that the state has been fractured by a leadership struggle between Governor Fubara and his predecessor, Nyesom Wike, who currently serves as the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory.

‎The conflict has previously resulted in the emergence of parallel legislative factions and multiple legal challenges regarding the legitimacy of the House of Assembly.

‎Some fraction claimed that the impeachment procedure is a politically motivated attempt to seize control of the executive branch of the state, while another fraction stated that the Governor has overstepped his constitutional authority, particularly regarding the 2026 budget and civil service appointments in the state.

‎Twenty-six members of the Rivers State House of Assembly signed the notice of impeachment, surpassing the threshold required to trigger the process.

‎Speaker Martins Amaewhule stated that the formal notice of allegations will be served to the Governor within seven days.

‎The Assembly is currently pursuing impeachment against both Governor Fubara and his Deputy Governor Ngozi Oduh, based on separate notices of allegations read during the session.

‎The Governor has seven days to respond to the allegations once he is Speaker Martins Amaewhule stated that the formal notice of allegations will be served to the Governor within seven days. served. After his response, the Assembly will vote on whether to investigate the charges or not. If they proceed, a seven-person panel will be set up by the State Chief Judge to investigate the claims.
