Police officers attached to the Ekiti State Command, who were recently captured in a viral video extorting a motorcyclist, have been summoned to the Force Headquarters in Abuja to face disciplinary action.

The transfer follows an order from the Inspector-General of Police, Tunji Disu, to hold the erring officers accountable.

The incident was officially reported on October 6 by representatives of the Federal University Oye-Ekiti (FUOYE) Biker Association. According to the petition, a police patrol team intercepted a lone rider along the Itapa to Ikole-Ekiti route, harassed him, and forcefully demanded a bribe of N20,000 under the guise of a routine roadworthiness check. The Ekiti State Commissioner of Police, Falade Micheal, after being alerted, ordered the identification and arrest of the personnel.

“The Commissioner of Police strongly condemns all forms of extortion, intimidation, abuse of authority and other conduct capable of undermining public confidence or bringing the Nigeria Police Force into disrepute” .

The Police Complaint Response Unit confirmed that the operatives have been moved from the State Headquarters in Ado-Ekiti to face an orderly room trial in Abjua.

Police authorities stated that no officers are authorised to solicit funds from citizens while discharging legitimate duties, assuring the public that the final outcome of the disciplinary proceedings will be fully implemented.
