The National Grassroots Movement (NGM) has issued a warning regarding a purported plot to impeach the President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio.
According to a statement released on Wednesday, December 31, the group alleges that a bloc of Northern senators is working in tandem with a prominent senator from the South-South to destabilize the National Assembly leadership.
The NGM claims the plot is aimed at weakening President Bola Tinubu’s administration ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The National Coordinator, of the group, Hon. Tunde Felix, and Publicity Secretary, Alhaji Musa Mustapha, stated that the group fingered a South-South senator as the individual positioned to take over the Senate Presidency and also turn the Senate into an opposition arena against the executive.
This alarm follows a series of similar rumors throughout late 2025, where a Senate Leader, Opeyemi Bamidele dismissed an impeachment rumors during plenary, stating that the Senate remains a big family and the Senate had zero tolerance for distractions.
The NGM stated that Akpabio’s leadership has been nationally balanced and crucial for stabilizing the country during the current reform era.
