President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has officially commissioned a fleet of 3,620 electric vehicles (EVs) in Maiduguri, Borno State. The fleet, procured by Governor Babagana Umara Zulum, is designed to provide affordable transportation for residents while mitigating the impact of rising fuel costs.
The commissioning was part of the three-state tour by President Bola Tinubu to Borno, Bauchi, and Lagos.
This EV project was launched after a successful pilot of 650 e-vehicles that offered subsidized transportation at ₦50 per trip.
The new fleet is supported by thousands of dedicated solar-powered charging terminals across the state capital, ensuring that the transport system remains operational even during national grid fluctuations.
The newly commissioned fleet includes 3,000 electric bicycles, 500 tricycles, 100 cars, and 20 luxury 42-seater buses, aimed at easing rural-urban transportation.
The President also commissioned three schools, including the Bola Ahmed Tinubu Government Day Secondary School, which is part of Zulum’s ambition to build 104 modern mega-schools to address the education gap caused by the Boko Haram conflict.
President Tinubu also inaugurated the upgraded Muhammadu Buhari International Airport terminal.
Government is all about people, and Professor Zulum is doing a very good job of caring for people. These electric vehicles and charging terminals ease the problems of mobility and the transportation economy – President Bola Ahmed Tinubu
After the commissioning, the President traveled to Bauchi to condole with the family of the late Sheikh Dahiru Bauchi before heading to Lagos for the Christmas holidays.
