A suicide bomber detonated an explosive device at a military checkpoint in Pulka, Gwoza Local Government Area of Borno State, on Sunday, December 14, which resulted in the deaths of five soldiers.
Dawn Herald gathered that the attacker, suspected to be a member of the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP), had spent the night hiding near the checkpoint. As the road opened for commuters on Sunday morning, the assailant blended in with passersby before detonating a Person-Borne Improvised Explosive Device (PBIED) in the midst of the troops.
This incident follows a series of lethal suicide attacks in the region, including the June 2024 Gwoza wedding bombings (32 killed) and a June 2025 attack at a viewing center in Konduga (11 killed).
Sources at the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital (UMTH) confirmed that all five soldiers targeted in the blast died from their injuries shortly after being evacuated.
The military has launched an operation in Mandara Mountains to flush out the remnants of the cell responsible for the Pulka blast. Meanwhile, the Governor of Borno state, Governor Babagana Zulum has urged residents to remain vigilant, as the festive season approaches.
