An elderly man, identified as Ladan Zubairu, was killed inside Yusuf Garko Mosque in the Maraba Quarters area of Kano on Monday morning while performing the call to prayer.
The attacker was pursued immediately, apprehended, and subsequently lynched by an angry mob.
According to Isa Kasim, the deceased son, his father had just finished the first call to prayer and was seated for supplications when an assailant entered the mosque, armed with a weapon, and slit his throat.
After tracking down and killing the suspect, residents reportedly discovered the throat of the cleric wrapped in a nylon bag in the suspect’s pocket. The mob then set the suspect’s residence ablaze before security personnel were able to restore calm to the area.
The State Police Public Relations Officer, CSP Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, stated that the police is committed to ensuring that anyone found culpable faces the full wrath of the law.
The bodies have been moved to the Mohammed Abdullahi Wase Teaching Hospital for autopsy.
