Stowaway arrested in Ilorin, thought plane was headed to the US

Security officials at the General Tunde Idiagbon International Airport in Ilorin, Kwara State, successfully apprehended a suspected stowaway who attempted to hide in the undercarriage of an aircraft, believing it was bound for the United States of America.

The incident, which occurred around 3:02 p.m. on Wednesday, December 10, has been confirmed by the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA).

The suspect, identified as Segun Martins, gained unauthorized access to the airside and positioned himself at the foot of an Overland aircraft that was preparing for takeoff at approximately 1502 hours (3:02 p.m.).

Martins attempted to conceal himself between the aircraft tyres, informing investigators that he believed the aircraft was destined for the United States of America and his intent was to continue escaping by hiding on the aircraft.

‎Ground security personnel upon sighting him quickly acted by apprehending him before the aircraft departed. Martins was immediately handed over to the
‎Airport Police for further investigation.

‎A similar incident happened in 2013, where a teenage boy survived a flight from Benin to Lagos in the wheel-well of a domestic Arik Air plane, believing the aircraft was headed to the US.

‎Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) and the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) officials stated that such incidents as evidence of security lapses and the need for perimeter fencing and surveillance at all airports.
