A road accident occurred in the early hours of Thursday morning on Zaria Road in Jos, the Plateau State capital, resulting in the death of eight male students of the University of Jos (UNIJOS).
The crash, which occurred opposite Unity Bank, involved a trailer and a bus carrying the students around 2:30 am. The fatalities have been confirmed by the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC).
Seven were pronounced dead at the scene, and one later succumbed to injuries at the hospital, bringing the total fatalities to eight, while three other students are currently receiving treatment at the hospital.
According to eyewitness reports, which was also confirmed by the FRSC, stated that the bus was over speeding, and also engaging in a wrongful overtaking maneuver, causing the driver to lose control and ultimately resulting in the collision.
Some reports indicate the students were returning from a National Association of Plateau State Students (NAPSS)-organised event. One of the deceased was identified as Datong Miakop, the president of the UNIJOS chapter of NAPSS.
Plateau State Sector Commander of the FRSC, Olajide Mogaji, urged drivers to avoid night trips, excessive speed, dangerous driving, and driving while under the influence of alcohol, fatigue, or illness. Mogaji appealed to the public to report road emergencies promptly using the FRSC toll-free emergency number, 122.
