Lieutenant Colonel Pascal Tigri, the alleged leader of the recent failed military coup in the Benin Republic, is reportedly hiding in Togo, prompting the Beninese government to prepare a formal extradition request.
The revelation, confirmed by a senior Beninese government official speaking anonymously to the press after a coup attempt that occurred on Sunday, December 7.
Dawn Herald reported that the attempted military takeover briefly seized the state television station and there were reports of gun battles near the presidential residence, which was quickly tamed by the Beninese soldiers with the assistance of external forces. Nigeria reportedly deployed fighter jets to dislodge mutinous soldiers, followed by ground forces. ECOWAS on the other side deployed elements of its standby force, including troops from Ghana, Sierra Leone, and Côte d’Ivoire.
The rebel soldiers stated that it was as a result of the alleged mismanagement of the country by President Patrice Talon that necessitated the coup attempt.
