President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has formally asked the Senate to approve the deployment of Nigerian troops to the Republic of Benin, following an urgent appeal from the Beninese government to counter a recent attempted coup.

President Tinubu’s request was conveyed in a letter read by the Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, during Tuesday’s plenary session.

The request is based on Section 5 (5), Part 2 of the 1999 Constitution (as amended), which requires legislative consent for the deployment of Nigerian armed forces outside the country.

Tinubu explained that the intervention was prompted by an urgent appeal from the Benin Republic government for quick air support after an attempted unconstitutional takeover of power.

The President stressed that the coup attempt is a grave threat to the stability of Benin’s democratic institutions. He added that Nigeria has a responsibility, anchored on ties of friendship and the collective security principles of ECOWAS, to respond quickly.

The Senate President referred the request to the Committee of the Whole for consideration.
