French President Emmanuel Macron has called on the international community to step up its engagement with Nigeria to help combat the surge in insecurity, particularly the growing threat of terrorism and mass abductions in the northern region.
Following a conversation with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Macron stated that France is in solidarity with Nigeria and pledged to strengthen bilateral partnerships. He issued a warning to other global partners, stating that no one can remain a spectator to the crisis.
We call on all our partners to step up their engagement. No one can remain a spectator – Macron
Macron statement comes after global concern over the surge of violence, including the recent mass kidnapping of over 300 pupils and teachers from St. Mary’s Catholic School in Papiri, Niger State, on November 21, 2025, an attack described as one of the largest in Nigerian history. As of the time this report was published, many of the victims remain in captivity.
The French President wrote on X (formerly Twitter) that the partnership with Nigerian authorities and support for affected populations would be carried out at President Tinubu’s request.
France is seeking a collective international response to tackle the root causes and manifestations of the insecurity, rooted in the interplay of resource struggles, criminality, and extremist ideology.
