The Federal Government, through the Ministry of Education, has moved to clarify rules regarding subject selection in the revised Senior Secondary School Curriculum, assuring students that there are no restrictions on their choices as registration for the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) continues.

The clarification, issued on Saturday by the Minister of Education, Maruf Tunji Alausa, and the Minister of State for Education, Sa’id Suwaiba Ahmad, aims to put an end to the confusion among students, parents, and school authorities.

The government confirmed that all approved subjects remain fully open for students. This means a science student can freely select subjects from the social sciences or arts, and vice versa. The only condition is that the choices must be properly guided by a school authority, parent, or certified counsellor.

The subject formerly known as Information and Communication Technology (ICT) has been officially renamed Digital Technology. The Ministry stressed that this is purely in nomenclature and does not alter the curriculum content, stating that students who previously offered ICT are fully eligible to register for Digital Technology.

The Ministry confirmed that six trade subjects have been approved under the curriculum. However, the registration for a trade subject is not obligatory if the student has not been exposed to or taught the subject in school. A student may only register for one if the school offers it and they have completed the required coursework.

The Ministry urged all stakeholders, including examination bodies and school proprietors, to rely on verified information to ensure a seamless and accurate registration process.
