The National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP), Kano Zonal Command, announced on Wednesday the rescue of seven female victims of human trafficking and the arrest of one suspect in Kano State.

The victims were rescued on December 2,  after a raid on a residential house where they were being held. NAPTIP stated that the women were being prepared for movement to Saudi Arabia for exploitative labor, having been placed under debt bondage.

Human trafficking for labor exploitation in the Middle East, particularly Saudi Arabia, remains a major concern in West Africa. Traffickers often exploit victims by promising lucrative jobs, only to subject them to harsh conditions and debt bondage, where the victims are forced to work to repay exorbitant fees charged for their travel and visas.

The victims were placed under debt bondage, with each expected to pay back N10 million after being subjected to exploitative labour in Saudi Arabia…While one suspect has been arrested, other accomplices remain at large. Investigations are ongoing to apprehend the fleeing suspects and bring them to justice – Mohammed Habib, Kano Zonal Public Relations Officer for NAPTIP

NAPTIP intervention in Kano occurred just before the victims were scheduled to depart from Abuja Airport. ‎NAPTIP’s pledge to  continue with the investigation to apprehend the remaining accomplices responsible for the transnational trafficking ring, in order to face the full wrath of the law.
