Inmates at the Sokoto Correctional Centre in northwest Nigeria have reportedly declared Nnamdi Kanu, the imprisoned leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), as their Prison President following his transfer to the facility.

Upon his arrival at Sokoto Prison, inmates reportedly unanimously declared Kanu their Prison President, with officials describing his cell block as having turned into a “mini Radio Biafra” due to his influence.

The development comes just days after the Federal High Court in Abuja sentenced Kanu to life imprisonment on terrorism charges. Justice James Omotosho found Kanu guilty on seven counts, including terrorism and membership of a proscribed group, sentencing him to life imprisonment.

‎Following the judgment, Kanu was moved from the DSS detention in Abuja to the Sokoto prison, far away from his support base in the southeast. His transfer to a regular prison from Department of State Services (DSS) custody was intended to enforce his sentence.

‎Kanu’s family claimed the Federal High Court has refused to issue a “production warrant” required to transport him back to Abuja to process his appeal. Kanu’s legal team pledged to fight to ensure his right to appeal is not technically frustrated by his transfer to a distant facility.
