ASUU to decide on strike action after government renegotiation

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) is scheduled to hold a National Executive Council (NEC) meeting on Wednesday to determine its next steps following the conclusion of final renegotiations with the Federal Government.

The meeting comes as ASUU’s one-month strike ultimatum recently expired, raising the threat of an immediate and indefinite closure of public universities nationwide.

‎The government’s negotiation team, led by Yayale Ahmed, held a last-minute two-day discussion with ASUU starting Monday, in an effort to avert the looming nationwide strike.

‎The current standoff stems from the government’s perceived nonchalant attitude towards implementing the terms of the 2009 ASUU-Federal Government agreement which includes the reviewing the 2009 ASUU-Federal Government agreement, payment of outstanding salaries and earned allowances and releasing funds for university revitalisation.

‎The Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, has insisted the government has met nearly all of ASUU’s demands and that President Bola Tinubu has mandated that no strike should occur.

‎Meanwhile, the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has publicly backed the union, warning it will fight alongside the academic community if the government fails to address the demands.
