The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has declared Sunday, December 7, as a nationwide day of prayer. The apex Christianity body is calling on all denominations to unite in seeking divine intervention against what it termed the “ongoing Christian genocide” in Nigeria.
In a circular issued from the National Christian Centre in Abuja, CAN President Archbishop Daniel C. Okoh instructed church leaders across all blocs and zones to mobilize their congregations for this solemn prayer.
The prayer is not just about the violence itself, but the humanitarian crisis it has birthed. According to the circular signed by General Secretary Apostle Samson A. Fatokun, Christians are tasked with praying for the divine stopping of the activities of terrorists, kidnappers, and bandits, as well as the safe resettlement of thousands of displaced Nigerians who have been sacked from their ancestral homes.
I am directed by the CAN President… to inform all church leaders and pastors of the declaration/observance of a one-day nationwide prayer against the ongoing Christian genocide in the country. Kindly ensure that this prayer is taken with all fervency. We strongly believe that our God will rise in power as He did in Esther’s time – Apostle Fatokun
The “Christian genocide” narrative has gained traction internationally, which was reignited by the United States President Donald Trump’s decision to redesignate Nigeria as a “Country of Particular Concern” (CPC), issuing warnings about potential military intervention if the killings do not cease.
If the Nigerian Government continues to allow the killing of Christians, the USA may very well go into that now disgraced country… to completely wipe out the Islamic terrorists who are committing these horrible atrocities – Trump
Just this Friday, National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu met with U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth at the Pentagon to address these very allegations. However, as churches across the federation prepare for this spiritual gathering on December 7, the focus remains on the power of prayer to restore peace and tranquility to a fractured nation.
