A Nigerian Presidential Committee tasked with revamping security training institutions found the Nigeria Police Training School in Nonwa-Tai, Rivers State, to be in a deplorable and largely abandoned condition, with vandalised infrastructure and overgrown grounds.
The committee’s chairman, Governor Peter Mbah, declared that the current state makes it impossible to train a professional police force, and pledged to quickly deliver a blueprint for a total overhaul, acting on President Bola Tinubu’s directive for urgent reform.
The inspection was part of a nationwide tour ordered by President Tinubu to evaluate police and NSCDC training institutions. The committee, which includes Governor of Rivers State Siminalayi Fubara, retired IGP Usman Alkali Baba, and AIG Olatunji Disu, was confronted with visible evidence of the Police training institutional decay at Nonwa-Tai, which was established in the 1970s and was last used for recruits in 2022. President Tinubu inaugurated the committee to urgently assess and restore these facilities, stressing that institutional decay compromises the quality of law enforcement.
The governors on the committee, including Peter Mbah and Dapo Abiodun, were tasked with developing a sustainable solution and, to rebuild the institution which the past administrations failed to deliver. Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun confirmed the committee is divided into two teams (North and South) and has a one-month deadline to submit a comprehensive report to the President.
Governor Fubara welcomed the federal initiative, describing the visit as a step toward restoring professionalism.
The committee is currently developing a detailed financial estimate, known as a “bill of quantities,” to ensure the necessary funds are accounted for, unlike the past unfulfilled promises of previous administrations.
