A cholera outbreak in the Mubi Local Government Area (LGA) of Adamawa State, has resulted in 10 reported deaths, according to Dr. Felix Tangwami, the State Commissioner for Health, confirmed that all victims died in their homes without seeking medical treatment.

The state government, in collaboration with the World Health Organization (WHO), has initiated a rapid response that includes patient tracing, treatment, and hygiene awareness campaigns to contain the spread.

‎From the beginning, we have been on top of the situation. Our presence has been there, and this cannot be denied – Tangwami

Cholera is an acute diarrheal infection caused by contaminated food or water, often on the rise in Nigeria during the rainy season or in areas with poor sanitation and limited access to clean drinking water. Mubi LGA, like other communities in Adamawa State, is prone to such outbreaks, often exacerbated by displacement and inadequate infrastructure.

Cholera is easily treated with rehydration therapy, but it can be fatal within hours if untreated. The Adamawa State government and the World Health Organization (WHO) have deployed teams, including epidemiologists and volunteers, to trace victims, provide services, and educate the community on hygiene, in order to reverse this trend by identifying cases early and ensuring rapid hospital admissions. As of Tuesday, 25 patients were already receiving care, with many others treated and discharged.

The health commissioner directed an appeal to traditional leaders to support the government by encouraging residents to promptly seek treatment at health facilities.
