Governor Douye Diri of Bayelsa State, a traditional stronghold of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has officially defected to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

Vice President Kashim Shettima led a delegation of APC leaders, including the party’s National Chairman, Professor Nentawe Yilwatda, and several state governors, to the capital, Yenagoa, to formally receive the defecting governor today, Monday, November 3, 2025.

Governor Diri had earlier resigned from the PDP on October 15, 2025, and subsequently declared his allegiance to the ruling party, stating that the action was in the overall interest of Bayelsa State and to join the “Renewed Hope family.”

Bayelsa State, located in the oil-rich Niger Delta, has been a historical bastion of the PDP since Nigeria returned to democracy in 1999. It is the home state of former President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan (PDP). The defection of the sitting governor is a huge political blow to the PDP, which has already seen several of its state governors in the South-South and South-East regions defecting to the APC ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The defection shows the consolidation of power by President Bola Tinubu’s APC government, thereby weakening the national opposition. The defecting governors often stress the need to align their state with the party in power at the center to ensure optimal federal development and patronage, a concept known in Nigerian politics as “connecting to the center.”

Critics and opponents will never cease from talking. According to many political watchdogs, the defection represents a betrayal of the voters’ mandate, as many Bayelsans overwhelmingly elected Diri on the platform of the PDP. They view the defection as a movement fueled by transactional interests rather than genuine ideological shifts, mainly for political survival.
