The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has identified 2,658 admissions as illegal from 17 universities, polytechnics, and colleges of education during the 2024/2025 academic session.

JAMB’s institutional analysis, obtained on Friday in Abuja, detailed the extent of illegal admissions flagged across multiple institutions. Among them, Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University accounted for the highest number with 1,847 cases, followed by Osun State University with 492, and Abubakar Tafari Ali Polytechnic with 148.Other affected institutions include the Federal College of Animal and Health Production (66), University of Calabar (28), College of Education Oro (12), Michael and Cecilia Ibru University (12), Redeemer’s University (5), Pan-Atlantic University (5), Nigerian Army College of Education (2), Kwara State Polytechnic (1), and Best Solution Polytechnic (1), among others.

The admissions deemed illegal were those conducted outside JAMB’s Central Admissions Processing System (CAPS).

CAPS, introduced in 2017, is designed to promote transparency, fairness, and merit-based admissions. Candidates use the system to track, accept, or reject admission offers and verify their admission statuses.

During JAMB’s 2025 policy meeting, the Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, issued a stern warning;

‎Severe sanctions, including withdrawal of assets and punishment of officials, will be imposed on institutions involved in illegal admission racketeering

The board has consistently cautioned institutions and candidates against offering or accepting admissions outside CAPS, stressing that students admitted illegally risk losing eligibility for the National Youth Service Scheme.
