Lawmakers pushes bill to prevent the President from sacking EFCC Chairman

The House of Representatives passed a bill for a second reading that seeks to amend the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) Act, 2004. The proposed legislation aims to enhance the anti-graft agency’s independence by requiring National Assembly approval before the President can remove the EFCC Chairman from office.

‎Historically, the agency’s leadership has seen frequent turnovers, sometimes amid accusations of political interference from the executive branch. The current Act (Section 3(2)), grants the President broad power to remove the Chairman for reasons including misconduct or simply if the President believes it is not in the interest of the commission and of the public.

‎Those who favor the existing structure argue the President, as the head of the executive branch, needs the authority to ensure accountability and swift action against a non-performing or compromised head.

‎This bill addresses long-standing concerns among transparency advocates that the EFCC lacks the institutional protection required to operate without fear of political retribution.

‎The bill’s sponsor, Hon. Yusuf Adamu Gagdi stated that the proposed changes would restore public confidence, enhance transparency, and ensure the EFCC operates as a professional and independent body.

‎The bill now advances to the committee stage for further deliberation and potential public hearings. If the bill becomes law, it would significantly fortify the EFCC Chairman’s tenure, making it one of the most protected positions in the country.
