A large fire has destroyed more than 500 temporary market stalls at Shuwaki Market in the Ghari Local Government Area of Kano State, northern Nigeria. The incident occurred on Wednesday afternoon, resulting in huge economic losses for local traders.
The Kano State Fire Service successfully contained the blaze, reporting no casualties.
Shuwaki Market, situated in a rural part of Kano State, housed an estimated 1,000 stalls. The devastation has instantly stripped hundreds of small business owners of their livelihoods, many of whom operate on credit or loans. The official cause remains under investigation, but the Kano State Fire Service Public Relations Officer, Saminu Yusif Abdullahi, mentioned that the service suspected the blaze was caused by the activities of individuals believed to be intoxicated residents of the market area.
The major concern is the sudden loss of capital and inventory for the traders, many of whom were operating with loans. These traders are appealing for urgent governmental aid. Amina Ibrahim, a seller of female clothing, stated:
I lost over N1.5 million worth of goods. I am appealing to the state government to come to our aid – Amina
Business analysts and safety experts highlight the systemic issue of poor infrastructure and lax safety enforcement. Seasoned businessman Bashir Adamu stated that most market structures in Kano and across Nigeria are not designed with fire safety in mind, calling the event a severe economic setback. He also appealed to the government to establish emergency recovery funds for traders affected by this mayhem.
Experts advise the state to transition from providing temporary relief to enforcing long-term fire prevention policies, including providing insurance schemes and structural safety overhauls in vulnerable markets.
