The United States Embassy in Abuja has issued a security alert to citizens ahead of the planned #FreeNnamdiKanuNow protest scheduled for Monday, October 20, 2025, in the Federal Capital Territory. The protest, organised under the banner #FreeNnamdiKanuNow, is expected to draw crowds to Eagle Square and the Central Business District, with a march towards the Aso Rock Presidential Villa.

‎The event was announced by activist and former presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore, who described it as a historic and peaceful demonstration aimed at securing the release of Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) currently facing terrorism charges at the Federal High Court in Abuja.

The US Embassy warned of potential disruptions including roadblocks, traffic congestion, and possible confrontations between police and protesters around Eagle Square and the Central Business District, which could escalate into violence. It advised all US citizens to avoid the protest areas and severely limit movement throughout Abuja on the day.

The Embassy recommended that children stay home from school and domestic staff commuting from outside Abuja refrain from reporting to work. American citizens were urged to exercise caution, avoid crowds, monitor local news, keep a low profile, review personal security plans, and keep their phones charged in case of emergencies.

This advisory comes after the Federal High Court in Abuja refused a police bid to stop the protest, allowing it to proceed as scheduled.

The protest is a campaign organized solely for the release of IPOB’s leader Nnamdi Kanu, who has been in detention since June 2021.
