The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has condemned recent defections by Enugu and Bayelsa governors to the ruling APC, accusing President Bola Tinubu of trying to turn Nigeria into a one-party state ahead of the 2027 elections.
In a statement, ADC National Publicity Secretary Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi said the defections validate the opposition’s long-standing fears about the Tinubu administration’s political plans. Abdullahi argued that these governors abandoned their constituents for personal gain rather than conviction, calling the defections “political apostasy”.
He stressed the challenges Nigerians face under APC’s governance, pointing to failures in managing insecurity, the economy, healthcare, and corruption. Abdullahi noted that many Nigerians have distanced themselves from the APC because of these shortcomings.
The Tinubu administration has failed on multiple fronts. Every day, Nigerians pay the price with rising food prices, lack of jobs, and worsening insecurity – Abdullahi
The ADC insists that in a democracy, the opposition must stand firm against a failing government and offer alternatives. Instead, these governors joined the ruling party, undermining hopes of political change.
The ADC calls on Nigerians to see the 2027 elections as a decisive moment to reject political betrayal and choose leaders committed to national progress. Abdullahi urged the public to remain vigilant and support those fighting to save Nigeria’s democracy.
