Lieutenant Samson Haruna, a Nigerian Army officer and medical doctor, died from severe burns after his wife allegedly set him on fire during a domestic dispute at Wellington Bassey Barracks in Akwa Ibom State on September 22.

The tragic incident unfolded at the barracks located in Ibagwa, Abak Local Government Area, disrupting the usually disciplined environment with the shocking act of violence.

Lt. Haruna, who served as the Regimental Medical Officer with the 6 Battalion, was involved in a heated argument with his wife, Mrs. Samson Haruna. According to credible sources, during the quarrel she poured petrol on him and ignited it. Initially, the injured officer received treatment at the Military Reference Section of the barracks but his wounds were severe enough to require intensive care at the University of Uyo Teaching Hospital. Despite relentless efforts by medical professionals, Lt. Haruna succumbed to his injuries several days later.

The military authorities moved quickly to arrest the suspect, and she remains in custody awaiting investigation outcomes.

Counter-insurgency expert Zagazola Makama, who first revealed the incident on social media, said;

It is deeply saddening to see such violence take place within the barracks where discipline should be paramount. This loss is a blow to the military community – Makama

The call for an improved support system for military families continues to grow, as authorities have promised a thorough investigation.
