Mahmood Yakubu officially retired as chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on Tuesday, October 7, 2025, handing over leadership to May Agbamuche-Mbu, who will serve as acting national chairman.

The handover took place during a meeting with resident electoral commissioners (RECs) at the INEC headquarters in Abuja. Mahmood Yakubu, who has been at the helm of Nigeria’s electoral body, announced his retirement after years of serving the commission through various elections.

May Agbamuche-Mbu, formerly a senior official within INEC, will now serve as acting national chairman while the search for a new chairman continues.

This transitional phase is critical as INEC prepares for upcoming elections, requiring stable and effective leadership to ensure the process remains transparent and credible.
