Senator Oluremi Tinubu, Nigeria’s First Lady, has opened up about feeling isolated in her local church due to her husband’s controversial decision to run on a Muslim-Muslim presidential ticket in 2023, describing it as a “bitter pill” that divided her congregation.

‎In her new memoir, The Journey of Grace: Giving Thanks in All Things, released to mark her 65th birthday, Oluremi Tinubu recounts how the political choice made by President Bola Tinubu caused tension within the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG) parish she has been part of for 15 years. Despite being a committed Christian, she faced coldness and avoidance from some church members upon the announcement of the same-faith ticket by the ruling All Progressives Congress in 2022.

‎The RCCG is one of Nigeria’s largest Pentecostal churches, known for its wide-reaching congregation nationwide and internationally. Oluremi related that the church became visibly divided along political lines following the decision. She explained that being a Christian does not matter. According to the first lady, her local Assembly, Redeemed Christian Church of God, was split. ‎Despite the division and occasional hostility, the First Lady did not change her place of worship.

‎She also expressed gratitude towards elders and other encouraging members of her church who continued supporting her through prayers and moral support. Over the years, she rose within the church ranks from a worker to Assistant Pastor in 2018.
