During the World News Day, the Nigerian Guild of Editors (NGE) called on all levels of government to halt the use of restrictive laws that threaten press freedom, particularly criticizing the Cybercrime Act. The appeal was made to safeguard democracy and uphold journalists’ rights.
The editors’ association issued a statement outlining their dedication to editorial integrity and the protection of media practitioners’ freedoms. They expressed concerns over the strategies put in place to silence the press using legislation as a tool of intimidation.
They outlined the importance of media independence for democracy to thrive in Nigeria, urging authorities to desist from using legal provisions to obstruct truthful reporting. The statement also recognized the resilience of journalists across Nigeria and the world who continue to pursue accurate information despite increasing pressures.
We encourage government agencies and officials to refrain from weaponising laws like the Cybercrime Act to intimidate members of the press – Eze Anaba, President of NGE
The guild also called on media practitioners to reject misinformation and fake news, pledging to promote accuracy, fairness, and balanced coverage.
The Nigerian Guild of Editors urged public officials to comply fully with the Freedom of Information Act to enhance transparency and support free access to information. The body warned that any attempts to gag the press would jeopardize democratic expression and urge the public to stand behind journalists committed to truth.
