China’s former agricultural minister, Tang Renjian, was sentenced to death with a two-year reprieve on Sunday for accepting bribes exceeding 268 million yuan ($38 million) over a 17-year period, the People’s Court of Changchun announced.
Tang Renjian, who also served as governor of Gansu province and vice chairman of Guangxi autonomous region, was found guilty of taking cash and property bribes between 2007 and 2024. The court described the severity of his crimes as causing “particularly severe losses to the interests of the state and the people,” justifying the harsh sentence.
Tang’s downfall in history, has not been the first. Similar investigations into other top figures, including former defence ministers Li Shangfu and Wei Fenghe. Li Shangfu was removed from his position within seven months and expelled from the Chinese Communist Party on bribery charges, while his successor, Dong Jun, is reportedly under investigation.
