Julius Abure, the National Chairman of the Labour Party, was reportedly attacked by a woman known as Precious Oruche, or Mama P, at Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, on Friday. The party leadership has described this incident as a politically motivated act orchestrated by hostile forces.
As Abure patiently waited to board a Max Air flight to Benin, Mama P suddenly launched an unprovoked physical attack on him. Labour Party spokesperson Obiora Ifoh revealed that the confrontation persisted throughout the flight despite efforts from flight attendants to intervene. Upon landing, the hostile behavior continued, drawing attention from fellow passengers and airport security.
Security personnel eventually intervened, securing Abure safely and detaining Mama P, who was handed over to the police. The party was alarmed when the woman released a video showing connections with top police officials, claiming immunity from repercussions, and vowing to continue targeting Abure and other party executives. She accused them of destroying the Labour Party and blamed them for Peter Obi’s exit.
Labour Party leaders strongly condemned the assault, labelling it a reckless and deliberate attack. They insisted the police should investigate thoroughly and prosecute any individuals financing or supporting the act. The party has called for calm among its members while awaiting official inquiries to conclude.
Since its rise during the 2023 elections on the back of Peter Obi’s campaign and the Obidient movement, Abure’s tenure as chairman has faced numerous challenges. Although courts, including the Court of Appeal, have upheld his leadership, a Supreme Court ruling in April 2025 cast doubts on the legality of his continuing role. Several factions within the party have disputed authority, creating friction over constitutional interpretations and caretaker committee powers.
