The Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) has expressed profound grief over the passing of four of its employees following a devastating fire on Tuesday at Afriland Towers, located on Broad Street, Lagos. The blaze affected floors where key tax offices operate.
The tragic incident happened on the building’s sixth and seventh floors, home to the Medium Tax Audit and Onikan Emerging Tax offices. After receiving the alert, FIRS’s security and safety personnel promptly contacted the fire brigade. However, thick smoke had already filled the premises by the time emergency crews arrived.
In a statement shared on its X platform, the agency extended sorrow for the loss, noting that the calamity has deeply affected the entire FIRS community. The organisation said it remains closely involved with the families of the victims and has pledged support throughout this difficult period.
FIRS also announced that it is undertaking a thorough review and enhancement of safety procedures across all its offices nationwide in order to protect staff protection and prevent similar tragedies. This safety improvement campaign covers both leased and owned properties.
Officials from the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service confirmed rescuing nine individuals, five of whom required immediate resuscitation, while others escaped unharmed.
