The Nigerian national football team, the Super Eagles, have arrived in Bloemfontein, South Africa, in preparation for a crucial 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying match set for September 9.
Following their narrow 1-0 victory over Rwanda in Uyo, Nigeria’s squad is determined to close the points gap in Group C. Substitute Tolu Arokodare’s overhead kick secured the win, which propelled Nigeria to third place in the standings.
Meanwhile, South Africa leads the group with 16 points, closely followed by Benin with 11, and Nigeria with 10. Rwanda sits at the bottom on 8 points. With only the group leader guaranteed a direct World Cup berth, the Super Eagles face a daunting mission to overtake their rivals and keep their tournament hopes alive.
However, the buildup has been overshadowed by the absence of key striker Victor Osimhen. The forward, who featured against Rwanda, suffered a shin bruise and has been ruled out of the encounter in Bloemfontein. Osimhen returned to his club, Galatasaray, for further evaluation, leaving the Nigerian squad without their star attacker.
Though we miss Victor, every player is committed to giving their all on the pitch. This match is far from over, and we will fight until the final whistle – Chelle
Despite this setback, coach Eric Chelle remains optimistic and focused, planning training sessions at the Free State Stadium in preparation for the match.
