The Nigerian federal government has committed to assisting victims and survivors of the recent boat disaster in Borgu, Niger State, which claimed over 32 lives and rescued over 50 people.
The unfortunate event unfolded in the Borgu Local Government Area, striking a devastating blow to the local community. Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, conveyed the government’s sorrow, emphasizing the heavy toll on families and the state at large. The minister said that the government is deeply saddened by this loss, especially so soon after the floods that impacted Mokwa just months ago.
To alleviate the suffering, the federal government, working in collaboration with the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), will deliver essential aid and relief materials to those affected. This collaboration is aimed at ensuring timely assistance reaches families and those who survived the accident.
The Minister also lauded the prompt actions of the Niger State Emergency Management Agency, whose rapid intervention accounted for all passengers and facilitated rescue operations. Idris used the occasion to reiterate the critical importance of safety on Nigeria’s waterways, urging travelers to prioritize protective measures such as life jackets to prevent future calamities.
In addition, the government has tasked the National Orientation Agency (NOA) with implementing a comprehensive awareness campaign nationwide. This public education effort seeks to promote safer practices aboard inland vessels and reduce risks associated with water travel.
