The Federal Capital Territory Minister, Nyesom Wike, expressed optimism after Saturday’s local government polls in Rivers State, declaring that the pathway is now open to conclude the existing state of emergency which has been in place since March. He described the exercise as peaceful, legitimate, and a vital in restoring grassroots democracy.
Wike, who cast his vote in his home community of Rumuepirikom, praised the process as lawful and reflective of the people’s will. He credited President Bola Tinubu for insisting on the polls despite previous disruptions, pointing out that the Supreme Court’s decision invalidating the 2024 local government polls necessitated a fresh exercise to legitimize local authorities.
According to Wike, without elected representatives, local governments would remain excluded from receiving direct funds from the Federation Account, which hinders service delivery and development programs at the grassroots. He stated that with the concluded elections, local councils can now access their statutory allocations. emphasizing that the electoral process ensures the council’s financial independence.
The minister was applauded by the impressive voter turnout, particularly in residential neighborhoods. Reports from rural areas similarly indicated enthusiastic participation, a sign that Rivers people are eager to have their voices heard through democratic channels.
Wike affirmed that the emergency rule, which suspended the state governor, deputy, and legislative members, is set to expire on September 18. He envisaged a smooth transition where the elected officials will resume their duties, enabling coordinated governance from the state level down to grassroots representatives.
The coast is clear for lifting the emergency rule now that both local and state governments have legit representatives
The successful polls have set a precedent for democratic stability and empowered local authorities with financial autonomy. Wike called on all stakeholders to unite in supporting the transition and ensuring continued peace and progress across the state.
