In the early hours of Tuesday morning, suspected armed bandits raided a residence in Filin Canada Quarters, Sabuwar Unguwa, Katsina metropolis, abducting a family of three and fatally shooting a local vigilante who tried to intervene.

The incident unfolded around 3:00 a.m. when about seven assailants scaled the fence of 33-year-old Anas Ahmadu’s home, taking him, his pregnant wife Halimat, and their toddler daughter, Jidda Anas. According to family sources, Halimat is the daughter of a well-known petroleum businessman in the state.

Eyewitnesses reported hearing quiet voices among the attackers, suggesting some were guiding others during the assault.
A vigilante identified as Abdullahi Muhammad, aged 25, lost his life while attempting to shield the victims from the gunmen. The kidnappers fled before security forces arrived on the scene.

One neighbour recounted that Halimat managed to call for help just before the attackers forced their way in. She hid in a bathroom, but the intruders broke in, capturing the family. The husband had unsuccessfully tried to escape through the back.

The police confirmed the assault, adding that the Divisional Police Officer promptly responded and restored order in the neighborhood. DSP Abubakar Sadiq Aliyu said investigations are ongoing, and additional security personnel have been deployed to facilitate the rescue of the abducted family members.

The kidnappers reportedly made contact with the wife’s uncle later Tuesday evening, although it was unclear if they issued ransom demands.

The attack has heightened fears among residents amid growing insecurity in Katsina.
Security experts warn that the violence is no longer confined to rural areas but has moved into city precincts, putting even prominent citizens and officials at risk. A senior homeland security consultant noted that lapses in the state’s security setup, worsened by political meddling, have emboldened criminals.

The Chief of Army Staff visited Katsina recently, promising intensified efforts to combat insurgents and solicit greater community intelligence to root out the perpetrators.

Meanwhile, the acting governor has called for more ground troops and enhanced air support to strengthen counter-banditry operations.

Residents are urged to stay vigilant and report suspicious behaviors as security agencies pursue the kidnappers to safely recover the victims and bring the criminals to justice.
