A businesswoman in Rigasa, Kaduna, was sentenced on Thursday to nine months behind bars by a Shari’ah court after admitting to cheating her trading partners.

The ruling comes after accusations of dishonesty and misappropriated funds surfaced.
Maimuna Muhammad, the defendant, was found guilty of multiple charges including deceit, breach of trust, and unlawful management of financial resources. The presiding Judge, Malam Muhammad Adamu, handed down the judgment following her confession.

Prosecutor Inspector Sambo Maigari explained that Muhammad engaged in business where she would receive credit in the form of raw food items such as rice and beans, which she would process and sell before repaying the suppliers. A parallel pattern was established with another complainant who supplied her with bedsheets and curtains for resale purposes.

However, the arrangement deteriorated when Muhammad ceased repayments, citing various excuses before relocating from her residence in Rigasa to Maraban Jos, according to the prosecutor’s account.

The Judge stipulated that the sentence consists of three months imprisonment per offense, with an alternative option to pay fines amounting to N7,000 for each charge. Additionally, the convict was ordered to reimburse N350,000 to the first plaintiff for the rice and beans and an extra N10,000 to cover legal costs. Similarly, she must compensate the second claimant with N162,000 for the textiles alongside a N10,000 suit filing fee.

Judge Adamu remarked,

For each violation, the defendant will serve three months in jail or discharge a fine of seven thousand naira. Moreover, restitution is critical to remedy the damage caused to the victims

The prosecutor added,

Our clients trusted the defendant’s commitment to business ethics, but her actions betrayed that trust, causing significant losses

This event serves as a warning to entrepreneurs and business partners about the importance of integrity and accountability in commercial dealings. Observers hope the ruling will deter similar misconduct and reinforce trustworthiness within local trade communities.
