The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced that the nationwide Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise will begin on August 18, 2025. This move is part of the Commission’s broader efforts to enhance voter inclusion ahead of future elections.
In a statement released Thursday, Sam Olumekun, INEC’s National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, said the CVR will begin with online pre-registration, followed by in-person registration starting August 25. “Thereafter, the two processes will continue simultaneously for a year until 30th August 2026,” Olumekun stated.
The Commission also revealed that the number of associations seeking to be recognized as political parties has increased to 155, following the submission of applications by eight new groups. Details of their proposed party names, acronyms, logos, and interim leaderships have been made public via INEC’s official platforms.
Olumekun disclosed that INEC has created a dedicated portal for party registration and is currently reviewing submissions to determine which associations qualify to proceed to the next stage. “Shortlisted associations will be announced after the 16 scheduled bye-elections in 12 states on Saturday, August 16, 2025,” he noted.
The CVR exercise is expected to take place in 811 centres across the country, including the 774 local government areas, seven state offices, and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). These centres will operate from Monday to Friday, 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., excluding national public holidays.
To ensure a smooth registration experience, INEC says it will deploy an online CVR Live Locator tool, which will help citizens easily find the nearest registration centres.
In addition, the Commission has provided specific telephone numbers for each registration centre to assist the public with inquiries and support throughout the exercise.
The CVR process is crucial for allowing Nigerians who have reached voting age, or those who missed previous registrations, to be included in the voters’ roll ahead of the next election cycle.
INEC emphasized that this initiative not only promotes democratic participation but also strengthens the integrity of the electoral process. It urged all eligible Nigerians to take advantage of the one-year registration window.
The Commission reaffirmed its commitment to transparency and inclusivity, promising to provide continuous updates and public engagement as the process unfolds.
