The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has issued a fresh weather alert forecasting widespread thunderstorms and rainfall across various regions in Nigeria from Monday through Wednesday. The agency also warned of potential flash floods in several parts of the country due to the intensity of the expected rainfall.
In its weekly weather outlook released on Sunday in Abuja, NiMet projected thunderstorms and moderate rains on Monday morning in parts of Adamawa, Taraba, Sokoto, Kebbi, Zamfara, Jigawa, Kano, and Katsina States. These conditions, it said, would likely intensify later in the day across the entire northern region.
NiMet expressed concern about flood risks in specific northern areas. “There is a high possibility of flood occurring over parts of Adamawa, Taraba and Bauchi states during the forecast period,” the statement read.
The central region is also expected to experience light rain on Monday morning in areas such as Benue, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Niger, Kogi, and Nasarawa. By afternoon, these showers are forecast to extend to Kwara and Plateau States, including other parts of the region.
For the southern states, cloudy skies and light rain are anticipated in the morning across Ebonyi, Enugu, Imo, Anambra, Abia, Ogun, Edo, Delta, Lagos, Rivers, Cross River, Akwa Ibom, and Bayelsa. Later in the day, more widespread light rain is expected, with flood warnings issued for Oyo, Ogun, Edo, and Delta States.
On Tuesday, northern states such as Taraba, Katsina, Kebbi, Sokoto, Kaduna, and Zamfara will likely witness morning thunderstorms and moderate rains. The entire northern belt is forecast to remain wet throughout the day.
Intermittent rains are also expected in central Nigeria, including the FCT, Niger, Nasarawa, Kwara, Kogi, Plateau, and Benue States. The southern region will continue to experience cloudy skies and periodic light showers across most states.
NiMet identified Anambra, Delta, Bayelsa, Cross River, and Akwa Ibom as areas with a heightened flood risk during Tuesday’s weather pattern. The public in these states is advised to take precautions to mitigate the risk.
By Wednesday, morning thunderstorms are expected in parts of Taraba and Kaduna States. Later in the day, isolated storms and moderate rain are likely in Borno, Bauchi, Gombe, Yobe, Jigawa, Kano, and Adamawa.
In the central region, areas such as Nasarawa, Niger, and the FCT will have light rain in the morning, which may persist into the afternoon alongside showers in Kwara, Kogi, Plateau, and Benue States.
The southern states will continue to see light rain and cloud cover, especially in Ebonyi, Abia, Imo, Enugu, Anambra, Lagos, Edo, Rivers, Bayelsa, Delta, and Cross River. Flood warnings remain active, particularly for Bayelsa on Wednesday.
NiMet urged the public to adopt safety measures including avoiding driving during downpours, securing loose objects, disconnecting electrical appliances, and staying away from tall trees. Vulnerable individuals should dress warmly due to cooler night temperatures.
The agency also advised airline operators to seek updated weather information specific to each airport for flight planning and urged citizens to stay informed through NiMet’s official website: www.nimet.gov.ng.
