President Bola Tinubu will on Monday, 28th July 2025, host Nigeria’s victorious Super Falcons at the State House in Abuja following their thrilling 3-2 comeback win over Morocco to claim a record-extending 10th Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) title.

The players, who returned to the country on Sunday night, had earlier received a congratulatory video call from the President shortly after their historic win.

Monday’s reception is expected to serve as the highlight of national celebrations for the team’s remarkable feat in Morocco. The Super Falcons overcame a two-goal deficit to stun the host nation in front of a home crowd, reaffirming their status as the queens of African football.

During Saturday night’s video call, President Tinubu expressed his pride and joy, telling the players, “As a team, we are very proud of you; the entire nation is proud of you. You lifted our spirits, and we are all very happy.” He assured them of a grand welcome, commending the coaching crew, team officials, and support staff.

In a show of commitment to the team, the President had approved the payment of their outstanding bonuses and allowances ahead of the final match. With the players back on home soil, attention now turns to what rewards may be announced during Monday’s reception.

Tinubu specifically lauded Rasheedat Ajibade, who was named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player, and Esther Okoronkwo, who converted a crucial penalty in the 64th minute to kickstart Nigeria’s comeback. “That penalty was very courageous,” he said, also praising her role in setting up the second goal and delivering the decisive free-kick for the third.

Super Falcons head coach Justine Madugu, who had been under scrutiny leading into the tournament, credited the comeback victory to the team’s self-belief and composure. “We knew we could do it. Even at two goals down, we told the girls to stay calm and not give up,” he said. “Mental strength made all the difference.”

Madugu admitted that their initial game plan failed, but quick thinking and tactical changes in the second half turned the tide. “What we tried to avoid happened early on, but we adapted, and that changed everything,” he added, noting the players’ responsiveness and grit.

One of the tournament’s breakout stars, Esther Okoronkwo, reflected on the unity within the team. “This was my first time with the team, but we bonded from the start,” she said. “Even when we were trailing, we reminded ourselves we were in this together. The coach treated us like family, and we gave everything.”

Alozie Mitchell, the semifinal hero against South Africa, attributed their success to the indomitable Nigerian spirit. “There’s nothing Nigerians can’t achieve once we commit to it. That mindset carried us through every challenge,” said the Houston Dash forward.

The grand reception will likely mirror the recognition given to the Super Eagles earlier this year, when Tinubu honoured them with national awards and gifts after their AFCON silver-medal finish. The Super Falcons’ latest triumph further cements Nigeria’s dominance in African women’s football.

The comeback in Rabat was a testament to tactical maturity, resilience, and unity. The presidential welcome will not only honour a victorious team but also celebrate a moment of national pride that inspired millions across the country.
