The Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM) has strongly condemned the murder of two Nigerian nationals in Durban, South Africa.
The victims, identified simply as Austin and Ayo, were reportedly gunned down by masked assailants who stormed Austin’s office and shot both men at close range. Describing the incident as “senseless and intolerable,” NiDCOM Chairperson, Abike Dabiri-Erewa, called for swift action to apprehend and prosecute the killers.
In a statement issued by NiDCOM’s spokesperson, Abdur-Rahman Balogun, Dabiri-Erewa revealed that the Nigerian High Commission in South Africa has commenced a probe into the matter. She emphasized the need for the South African authorities to implement the early warning system previously agreed upon by both nations to curb xenophobic attacks and targeted violence against Nigerians.
“The continued killings of Nigerians in South Africa is unacceptable. This is why the early warning mechanism, which both countries committed to, must now be fully enforced,” Dabiri-Erewa stated. She extended her condolences to the bereaved families and promised that every effort would be made to ensure justice is served.
In response to growing concerns and rising tensions within the Nigerian community in South Africa, Dabiri-Erewa urged calm and restraint. She appealed to Nigerians to refrain from retaliatory actions and instead allow the law to take its course, stating, “Let us not take the law into our own hands. We must await the outcome of police investigations.”
Meanwhile, the Acting Nigerian High Commissioner in South Africa has formally requested a comprehensive and impartial investigation from local authorities. The diplomatic mission is closely monitoring developments and reaffirmed its commitment to protecting the rights and safety of Nigerian citizens abroad.
