Residents of Taraba State and Nigerians at large have been urged to report any violations of their right to freedom of religion or belief, as efforts intensify to protect fundamental human rights and promote peaceful coexistence among Nigerians
The call was made yesterday in Jalingo, Tuesday during the screening of Bridging the Abyss, a documentary film focused on promoting and protecting freedom of religion or belief (PP-FoRB)
The event was attended by hundreds of students from Tertiary institutions in the state and other members of Jalingo community was aimed at promoting peace coexistence and promoting the right of every individuals.
Organized by Search for Common Ground (SFCG) a non governmental organization with support from the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The programme was aimed at creating awareness about individuals’ rights to freely practice their faith and to foster tolerance and understanding especially among the youths in Taraba state.
Speaking at the event, the Senior Media Officer of SFCG, Katlong Dasat, described freedom of religion or belief as a fundamental human right enshrined in international law.
“Millions of people around the world including Nigeria still suffer discrimination, harassment, and violence because of their religious beliefs,” she noted.
Gaius Dachet, SFCG Project Manager, in his address, emphasized that religious freedom is not merely a religious concern but is deeply connected to peace, security, and sustainable development.
He stressed that protecting these freedoms could help prevent conflicts both in Taraba State and in the country In general.
Participants were encouraged to speak out against any violations of their rights and were provided with a toll-free helpline—0800-000-2233—for confidential reporting of cases involving discrimination or persecution based on religious beliefs.
“If you are facing discrimination or violations of your beliefs, call the toll-free line. It is confidential and free,” the participants were told.
Students and other participants who spoke with our correspondent expressed appreciation for the initiative and pledged to share the knowledge gained with peers students and members of their communities.
