Heightened security measures have been implemented across Benin City and other parts of Edo State today, July 7, as authorities move to prevent possible violence linked to the anniversary of the Black Axe confraternity, popularly referred to as 7/7.
The Edo State Police Command intensified patrols and stationed officers at identified black spots and critical areas, following intelligence suggesting that certain cult groups might attempt to disrupt public peace as part of their annual activities.
Police spokesperson, Moses Yamu, confirmed the development, noting that the Command was acting on credible intelligence. “We received reports that some cult elements were planning to cause mayhem today. The police are fully mobilized to prevent any breakdown of law and order,” Yamu said.
Commissioner of Police, Monday Agbonika, issued a strong warning to hotel, lounge, and bar operators, cautioning them against allowing their establishments to be used as meeting points for suspected cultists. “Any business found accommodating illegal gatherings will face the full wrath of the law,” he declared.
Agbonika further urged residents to remain on high alert and cooperate with security agencies by reporting any suspicious movements or gatherings. “We appeal to the general public to be security conscious and promptly report any suspicious activities,” he stated.
To that end, the police released emergency hotlines—08077773721 and 08037646272—encouraging residents to reach out immediately if they notice anything unusual in their surroundings.
