Operatives of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command’s Criminal Investigation Department arrested six suspects linked to a killing at Gosa Friday Market along Airport Road, which sparked unrest after a man was accused of stealing yams, police said.
The incident, involving the death of a man accused of stealing tubers of yam, caused widespread panic, leading many traders and residents to abandon the market, known for its affordability. FCT Police Commissioner Adewale Saka Ajao, addressing a briefing, condemned the vigilante act that led to the crisis.
Ajao reported that police swiftly intervened, engaging community leaders and traditional rulers to restore calm. By Thursday, Gosa Market resumed full operations under tight police surveillance, with officers ensuring normalcy and safety for traders and customers.
The commissioner labeled the killing a clear case of murder and warned against impersonation and unauthorized use of tinted vehicle windows, vowing continued enforcement. He highlighted the arrest of 82 suspects in the past two months, including 17 kidnappers and 17 robbers, with items like AK-47 rifles and vehicles recovered.
Ajao emphasized the FCT Police Command’s commitment to proactive policing, rescuing three children from traffickers and eight abandoned babies, now in social welfare custody. The command plans to intensify community policing and public sensitization to maintain peace in Abuja.
