Ghana-based Nigerian filmmaker Destiny Omon stated that the entertainment industry has reduced crime in Nigeria, announcing the premiere of his movie “Badagry” in Edo State on July 4, 2025.

Speaking at a press conference in Benin City, Omon highlighted the industry’s role in engaging youth, preventing crimes like theft. He urged government support for filmmakers, particularly by providing equipment like cameras and sound systems to support talented but underfunded creators.

“Badagry,” featuring Nollywood stars Alex Osifo, Yemi Black, Jude Orhorha, Destiny Omon, Nike Adams, and Christian Alex, addresses social issues such as drug abuse, kidnapping, prostitution, and armed robbery. The film will debut at the Government House festival hall in Benin City.

Omon, with nearly two decades of filmmaking experience in Ghana, noted Nigeria’s status as a major African film market. The movie, shot in Edo State in March, has support from the Edo State Government and Waste Management Board.

The production heavily involved local talent, with 60-70% of the cast and 90% of the crew from Edo State, reflecting Omon’s commitment to showcasing regional talent while tackling pressing social vices through film.
