The Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General Christopher Musa, has called on Nigerians, particularly young people, to use social media responsibly as a tool for promoting peace, public vigilance, and intelligence sharing in the fight against terrorism, insurgency, and extremist ideologies.

General Musa made the appeal on Saturday during a one-day Multi-Sector Conference on Countering Extremist Ideology, Insurgency, and Terrorism, held in Maiduguri, Borno State. Addressing participants, including students, academics, and security stakeholders, the Defence Chief emphasized the strategic importance of youth engagement and technology in enhancing national security.

“Security agencies cannot be everywhere at once. Citizens play a crucial role in intelligence gathering. Sometimes, all it takes is one phone call to prevent an attack,” Musa stated. “Silence is no longer an option. We must all be active participants in the effort to safeguard our country.”

As part of the conference, General Musa officially launched the Student Against Violent Extremism (SAVE 1 and 2) Task Forces, describing the initiative as a major step toward building a grassroots network of young peace ambassadors. The SAVE initiative aims to engage students in peaceful advocacy, peer education, and collaboration with security forces to prevent radicalisation within educational institutions and communities.

“Students are the torchbearers of new values,” Musa said. “Through peaceful advocacy, research, and collaboration with relevant stakeholders, you can help protect your schools and communities from the influence of extremist ideologies.”

He encouraged the newly inaugurated SAVE members to lead by example and promote a culture of responsibility and civic engagement. “Walk the talk. Be the examples you seek in others. Lead with integrity, commitment, and courage,” he charged.

General Musa also commended President Bola Tinubu for his Renewed Hope Agenda, which he said is driving efforts to restore peace and stability in the North-East. He expressed appreciation to the governors of Borno and Yobe states for their continued support of security operations across the region.

Despite the lingering threat of terrorist attacks, the CDS expressed optimism about the future. “Do not despair,” he urged. “Let every challenge strengthen your resolve to defeat terror. Let us use our platforms — social media, television, and radio — to counter extremist narratives and promote peace. The future is bright when our youth rise in unity for peace.”
