Former Super Eagles winger Emmanuel Amuneke has urged the Federal Government to promptly complete the distribution of houses promised to the 1994 Africa Cup of Nations-winning squad.
While confirming that he had already received his own allocation, Amuneke emphasized the need for equity. “They should hand over to the others now. Let them do it,” he said.
His comments follow the Federal Government’s ongoing efforts to fulfill the decades-old pledge made to the victorious Super Eagles team, which brought home Nigeria’s second AFCON title in Tunisia. The latest recipient is former striker Efan Ekoku, who was recently allocated a house in Abuja.
At a brief ceremony, the housing allocation letter for Ekoku was presented by Pemi Temitope, Director of Public Building and Housing Development, on behalf of the Minister of Housing and Urban Development. The move was described as part of a broader initiative to reward the squad’s patriotic contribution to the nation.
Representing Ekoku, his niece Lisa Jenifer Nwagbogun expressed appreciation for the long-overdue gesture. “It is truly heartening to witness such commitment to integrity and follow-through,” she said. “This gesture not only honours Mr. Efan Ekoku’s service but also restores faith in the value of public promises being kept.”
The pledge dates back to 1994, when the Super Eagles secured a 2–1 victory over Zambia in the AFCON final. Despite the delay, progress began in 2022 when then-President Muhammadu Buhari approved the implementation of the housing scheme, nearly three decades after it was promised.
As part of the initiative, housing units are being allocated to team members across various states and the Federal Capital Territory. The 1994 squad, often hailed as a golden generation, included iconic names such as Amuneke and Ekoku, whose achievements continue to resonate with Nigerian football fans.
