The Federal Government has assured Nigerians and the international community that Abuja remains safe, despite a recent security advisory from the United States Embassy.

The advisory, which cautioned U.S. staff and their families against visiting military or government facilities in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) for unofficial purposes, was downplayed by authorities in Abuja. The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, stressed that while foreign missions have the right to issue advisories, there is no immediate cause for concern within the FCT.

Idris, in a statement on Monday, highlighted the proactive measures put in place by Nigeria’s security agencies to protect residents, visitors, and critical infrastructure in the capital. “Abuja remains safe for all. Our security architecture continues to deliver significant successes in detecting and preventing potential threats,” he stated. He noted that the government is committed to ensuring the city’s reputation as one of the safest capitals globally.

The Minister pointed out that the U.S. Embassy’s advisory appears to stem from broader international security concerns rather than any specific or imminent threat within Nigeria’s capital. He called on Nigerians, investors, and diplomatic missions not to panic but to continue with their activities without fear. “There is no cause for alarm,” Idris reassured.

He further underlined the readiness of security and intelligence agencies to act swiftly and decisively in the event of any security challenge. The government, he said, is not only monitoring the FCT but also keeping a close watch on developments nationwide to safeguard lives and property.

Finally, Idris urged citizens to remain alert and report any suspicious activities to the appropriate authorities, while also encouraging them to go about their lawful business confidently. He emphasized that national security remains a top priority under the Renewed Hope Agenda, which he described as pivotal to Nigeria’s journey towards economic revival.
