Brazil’s Vice President, Geraldo Alckmin, alongside his wife Maria Alckmin, arrived in Nigeria on Tuesday to kick off the Second Session of the Nigeria-Brazil Strategic Dialogue Mechanism (SDM).
The high-level delegation touched down at the Presidential Wing of Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja, where they were received by top government officials, including Deputy Chief of Staff to the President, Senator Ibrahim Hadejia, and the Minister of Industry, Trade and Investment, Dr Jumoke Oduwole.
Their arrival marks a significant chapter in Nigeria’s efforts to strengthen South-South cooperation, with the visit expected to pave the way for major policy developments between both nations. Other dignitaries at the airport included the Minister of Livestock Development, Idi Maiha, and the Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Senator Abubakar Kyari, among others. The visit has been described by analysts as a major diplomatic milestone in Nigeria’s engagement with Latin America.
At the brief welcome ceremony, Senator Hadejia highlighted the importance of the visit to Nigeria’s development agenda. He stated, “This is a pivotal moment in Nigeria’s Renewed Hope Agenda. The dialogue mechanism reflects our resolve to harness South-South partnerships that bring real benefits to our people.” Hadejia further noted that Brazil’s strengths in agribusiness, energy transition, and industrialisation align with Nigeria’s current priorities.
The three-day dialogue is set to culminate in the signing of over 30 agreements aimed at deepening collaboration between both countries. These agreements cover vital areas such as defence cooperation, agricultural technology, renewable energy development, and cultural exchanges. Officials on both sides are optimistic that the accords will spur economic growth and technological advancement.
Observers say the renewed Nigeria-Brazil ties could serve as a model for broader South-South engagements. The outcomes of the dialogue are expected to have lasting impacts on sectors key to Nigeria’s socio-economic transformation and its quest for sustainable development.
