Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi arrived in Moscow on Monday to hold “important” talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin, days after US strikes on Iran’s nuclear facilities escalated regional tensions.
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi landed in Moscow on Monday for critical discussions with Russian President Vladimir Putin, following a major US attack on Iran’s nuclear sites 48 hours earlier. Russia, a key ally of Tehran, has condemned the US and Israeli strikes but has not provided military support despite a recent strategic partnership agreement with Iran. Araghchi emphasized the significance of consultations with Russia amid the “new dangerous situation,” according to Russian state media.
The talks come after Israel launched attacks on Iran starting June 13, 2025, prompting Tehran to retaliate with missiles and drones. Russia’s response has been cautious, with Moscow condemning the US strikes as “irresponsible” on Saturday but downplaying its obligations under the Iran partnership. The official IRNA news agency reported Araghchi would discuss regional and international developments stemming from the US and Israeli military actions with Putin and other senior Russian officials.
Putin had initially proposed acting as a mediator between Iran and Israel but clarified on Friday that he was only “suggesting ideas” after US President Donald Trump opposed a Kremlin role. Speaking at an economic forum in Saint Petersburg, Putin said Russia was not seeking to mediate but would welcome any ideas acceptable to both sides. Russia’s foreign ministry had previously warned against military intervention in the region.
The Moscow meeting underscores the deepening Iran-Russia alliance amid escalating tensions with the US and Israel. While Russia has not committed to military aid, the consultations aim to address the volatile regional situation and its broader implications. Araghchi’s visit highlights Tehran’s reliance on Moscow’s diplomatic support as it navigates the fallout from the recent strikes.
